Kota Startup Generates Electricity from Cow Dung, Saves ₹2.5 Lakh Monthly

Founded in 2015, Gau Organics is a dairy farm startup based in Kota, Rajasthan, that partners with farmers to grow and sell natural products like ghee, milk, oil, and jaggery.

Amanpreet Singh, a BTech graduate in Electrical Engineering, never imagined his career would lead him to revolutionize dairy farming in India. Despite his family’s successful wheat and rice farming, Amanpreet pursued a different path. He gained expertise through studies at the National Dairy Research Institute and Tel Aviv University, along with work experience at Nestle and Amul, before launching Gau Organics.

The Beginning

Starting Gau Organics was no small feat. Amanpreet and his team faced numerous challenges, including securing loans and investing personal savings. Established in 2015 and officially launched in 2016, the startup began with a vision to help farmers diversify their produce and improve their earnings.

Early Journey

Initially, Gau Organics focused on retailing products like ghee and oil on platforms like Amazon and through direct home delivery. The startup faced challenges but began to thrive in 2021, thanks in part to its early adoption of digital platforms. The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated their success by reducing customer acquisition costs and increasing demand for organic products.

Innovation with Cow Dung

Amanpreet’s innovative spirit led to the creation of a biogas generator that converts cow dung into methane. This methane powers farm operations and significantly reduces electricity costs. Initially costing ₹66 lakhs, the generator now costs ₹27 lakhs thanks to refined processes and experience. This innovation saves Gau Organics approximately ₹2.5 to ₹3 lakh in monthly electricity expenses.

Growth and Success

What began with a small team has grown to include 60-70 partners, farmers, and operators. Gau Organics serves around 4,500 customers daily, with its Gir Cow Ghee being a standout product. Despite not seeking external funding, Amanpreet plans to expand further and introduce the biogas generator to other farmers.

Future Plans

Gau Organics aims to enter the franchise model by late 2024 and to innovate large-scale biogas generators for farmers. The startup’s growth and impact have been recognized, including acknowledgment from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
