A former ISRO scientist has criticized Indian space startups, alleging that they are merely replicating ISRO’s work rather than innovating independently.

At the launch of Vaanam, a space tech accelerator based in Chennai, former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan advised Indian startups to avoid duplicating ISRO’s work. Instead, he urged them to focus on developing innovative products, particularly in launch platforms and thruster technology.

“I’m not entirely satisfied with the work of Indian space startups,” Narayanan remarked. “These startups have the potential to create superior launch platforms. They should not just replicate ISRO’s existing technology but should explore areas where ISRO lacks expertise.”

Tamil Nadu’s Minister of Industries, T Raja, also attended the event, where he highlighted the launch of Vaanam, aiming to support startups in the growing space tech sector.

Narayanan, who was previously implicated in a 1994 ISRO espionage case but later cleared of all charges, expressed concerns about the government’s recent ₹1,000 crore VC fund for space tech startups. He emphasized that the effectiveness of this funding depends on its allocation and the startups’ ability to utilize it effectively.

Narayanan is now a member of Vaanam’s advisory board and is working to mentor and guide space startups in Tamil Nadu, aiming to bring six to seven startups into the accelerator over the next eight months.
