Last year, Barbenheimer took the world by storm, with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer dominating the box office and critics’ praise. Released on July 21, 2023, these two vastly different films sparked debates among moviegoers about which one to see first.
Even Tom Cruise found himself caught in the Barbenheimer dilemma. In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Cruise revealed his plan: “I want to see both Barbie and Oppenheimer. I’ll catch them both opening weekend—Friday for Oppenheimer and Saturday for Barbie.” He endorsed the double-feature trend that became widely known as “Barbenheimer.”
Cruise, known for his passion for cinema, shared his thoughts on the movie-going experience: “I grew up seeing movies on the big screen. That’s how I make them, and I like that experience. It’s immersive, and having that as a community and an industry is important. I still go to the movies.”
While promoting Mission: Impossible 7, Cruise expressed his support for both films on Twitter, praising the work of his fellow filmmakers and actors. He shared photos of himself and Mission: Impossible 7 director Christopher McQuarrie with posters of Barbie and Oppenheimer.
As reported by Box Office Mojo, Oppenheimer starring Cillian Murphy has earned USD 976 million, while Margot Robbie’s Barbie has surpassed USD 1.4 billion, making it one of the highest-grossing films of the year.
