Adam Shamsudeen’s life took a significant turn when his father suffered a heart attack, leading the family to return to Kerala from Saudi Arabia. Faced with financial challenges due to his father’s inability to work, Adam and his family had to take loans to make ends meet.
With a BTech in computer science and experience in the pharma industry, Adam realized the importance of preventive health. His research into healthy living highlighted the benefits of mushrooms, prompting him and his wife, Raeesa Manaal, to start Grow The Funguy.
The Birth of Grow The Funguy

Starting from their home with an investment of about ₹10 lakh, Adam and Raeesa juggled multiple roles to establish their startup. Their initial offering was a mushroom grow kit priced at ₹699, designed to make home cultivation accessible and easy.
Their breakthrough came with “Mushpellets,” innovative pelletized growing mediums that simplify mushroom cultivation. Farmers only need to add hot water and seeds, making the process effortless.
Innovations and Growth
Mushpellets quickly gained popularity, leading to significant revenue growth and establishing Grow The Funguy as a pioneer in the Indian mushroom market. The couple is also working on an advanced concept called Grow Room, which uses AI to manage mushroom cultivation in containers via smartphone controls.
Their product line now includes a range of mushroom-based supplements, DIY kits, and exotic varieties such as Lion’s Mane and Reishi. They have expanded to include 48 product categories, with Mushpellets alone selling around 20 tonnes last month.

Financial and Operational Success
Grow The Funguy began with modest revenue of ₹2-3 lakh in its first year but surpassed ₹1 crore in FY24. The company aims to achieve ₹3 crore in revenue for FY25. Their products are sold across India, with a strong presence in metro cities like Bangalore, Delhi, and Hyderabad.
From Corporate to Entrepreneurial Success
Adam, who previously earned ₹5 lakh per month, found the transition from a stable job to entrepreneurship challenging. However, his passion for healthy living and support from Raeesa made the journey worthwhile.
Raeesa, also an engineer, left her job after their venture in handmade decorative products became profitable. Together, they are dedicated to making a positive impact through their startup.
