Following a violent incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where an unidentified mob caused significant damage, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has issued a strong condemnation of the vandalism. Meanwhile, the Governor of West Bengal has arrived at the hospital to address the situation.

On August 15, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) strongly condemned the vandalism that occurred at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. This incident happened amidst ongoing protests by doctors and medical staff in response to the rape and murder of a woman medic. The IMA has called for an emergency meeting with its state branches to determine the next steps in addressing the situation.

The vandalism occurred during midnight protests by women demonstrating against the brutal rape-murder of the doctor on August 9, 2024. According to reports, individuals disguised as protesters breached the hospital premises, damaging property and throwing stones at police officers.

The IMA criticized the West Bengal government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, for what it described as a failure in maintaining public order. BJP Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari accused “TMC goons” of orchestrating the vandalism, claiming it was directed by Mamata Banerjee.

The body of the woman postgraduate trainee was discovered in a seminar hall at the medical college on August 9. A civic volunteer has been arrested in connection with the crime. Following the incident, the Calcutta High Court has ordered the transfer of the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
