Ola has transitioned from using Google Maps to its own proprietary mapping solution, achieving an annual savings of ₹100 crore.Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has been pushing to reduce reliance on foreign technology in recent quarters, and his latest move reflects both strategic and financial benefits.
Ola has transitioned from using Google Maps to its own Ola Maps for its ride-sharing app, a change that is expected to save the company Rs. 100 crore annually. “We’ve fully exited Google Maps. We previously spent Rs. 100 crore a year, but this month we’ve reduced that to zero by moving entirely to our in-house Ola Maps,” Aggarwal announced on X. He also revealed that Ola Maps will be available on Krutrim Cloud, Ola’s cloud service, with new features like street view, NERFs, indoor images, 3D maps, and drone maps on the way.
Previously, Ola relied on Google Maps’ API to manage ride estimates, route calculations, and duration predictions, incurring costs for each use. By developing its own mapping technology, Ola eliminates these expenses, contributing to significant cost savings.
This move aligns with Aggarwal’s broader strategy to minimize dependence on foreign companies. Recently, he criticized Microsoft-owned LinkedIn for its AI’s use of pronouns and responded by shifting Ola’s cloud services from Microsoft Azure to Krutrim Cloud within a week.
Aggarwal’s entrepreneurial journey has been marked by impressive milestones. After founding Ola Cabs and maintaining a strong position against Uber in India’s ride-hailing market, he launched Ola Electric, which has become India’s largest two-wheeler electric vehicle manufacturer. Last year, he introduced Krutrim AI, which achieved unicorn status within 41 days, and recently rolled out Krutrim Cloud, offering competitive GPU pricing. With three unicorns under his belt, Aggarwal continues to push boundaries and scale new ventures, making him one of the most ambitious Indian founders today.
