Zerodha CEO Nithin Kamath: Linux Laptops Helped Us Avoid Issues During Microsoft Outage
On July 20, 2024, Zerodha CEO Nithin Kamath explained how the company’s reliance on Linux laptops helped them sidestep issues during a recent Microsoft outage. Kamath emphasized the importance of cybersecurity, referencing a significant Rs 20,000 crore scam and advocating for two-factor authentication (2FA).
Kamath highlighted in a post, “Cyber risk is a major financial concern. I’ve heard of a massive scam involving Rs 20,000 crores that impacted millions of Indians.”
He reiterated in his July 20 post, “Almost our entire team, including non-technical staff, uses Linux laptops. I personally use Zorin (Linux). Thanks to Kailash’s emphasis on avoiding enterprise deals, we were unaffected by yesterday’s outage.”
Kamath’s comments came in light of a recent Microsoft Windows outage linked to a problematic update from security software vendor CrowdStrike. Microsoft and CrowdStrike addressed and resolved the issue swiftly, and Microsoft provided an official recovery tool to expedite the process for Windows systems.
Social Media Reaction:
Reactions to Kamath’s post have been varied.
One user commented, “Linux is not entirely hack-proof unless custom-coded. There should be a backup plan to handle such large-scale outages!”
Another said, “While Microsoft systems face numerous issues, Linux and Mac remain strong alternatives.”
A third user remarked, “Companies should use a mix of operating systems, though this increases costs and complexity, which is a challenge for many in India.”
A fourth user pointed out, “It’s ironic that you’re discussing tech efficiency while many customers complain about your application failing to execute orders.”
